I can remember chatting to my best friend, about ten years ago about what to do to prepare myself for a Non-Executive Director position; ‘become a school governor’ she said. So I did and I have never looked back. Pay attention to what you do outside of work, to gain experience and build additional skills, along with a strong network, is key to preparing for any paid board position.
I am delighted therefore that we are welcoming Claire Emery from Emery Support Services. Claire has been a governor for a number of multi-academy trusts and has a wealth of experience in governance and what makes a good board work effectively.
Lizzie Jacobs, Cabinet Office Is joining us from the Cabinet Office Centre for Public Appointments who recently published their diversity action plan (click to download) and Lizzie will talk about the breadth of roles available and how they are looking to recruit more women, BAME candidates, younger people and those from outside of London to apply for public appointment roles.
Laura Kerby, CEO, Penny Brohn will join us to talk about being a CEO of a high profile, successful charity and the role of trustees in holding the executive team to account and the importance of having a board drawn from different background and life experiences.
And an organisation that helped me when I was applying for my first NED, we are delighted to welcome Alison Thorne from Women on Boards.
It’s one of two panels, the line-up of the second panel will be announced tomorrow.
